About

  • Printing Process
Relief printing is a traditional technique that ranges from rubbing a heel ball wax over paper laid on a church brass in medieval England to the many blocks used in the exquisite Ukiyo-e in workshops in Japan.
Whether the image of a holy Christian Saint or the portrait of a famous Kabuki actor, relief printing is a beautiful form of expression.

The production of originals requires profound knowledge of the materials and tools involved and close attention to detail throughout the whole process.

After creating the design, the image is transferred to a linoleum block using a permanent marker.
Using different shapes and sizes of gouge, the image is carved into the block by removing the “white” areas.

An even layer of oil based ink is applied to the raised areas with a brayer.
The hand deckled mould-made paper is placed on the inked block and these go through a printing press which transfers the ink to the paper with a huge amount of pressure.

The printed design is a mirror image of the block. After around three days of drying, the original is ready to be painted with watercolours and gouache.

Every original produced is signed and numbered, and due to the traditional high pressure printing process - and the hand-painted watercolours - every single one is unique.
